If you’ve never been to a pawn shop, you’ve probably formed an idea from TV — guys haggling over fake-looking treasures, dramatic music, “I’ll have to call my expert.” That’s TV. Here’s what actually happens at Advantage Pawn when you walk in for the first time.
Step 1: You Walk In
Both stores are clean, well-lit, and staffed by people who do this every day. No pressure, no upsell, no theater. There’s a counter, display cases, and people behind them. You can browse first if you want.
Step 2: You Tell Us What You Have
“I want to sell this watch.” Or “I need a loan against this gold chain.” Or “I’m not sure what this is, can you take a look?” All three are normal. We’ve heard every version.
Step 3: We Inspect and Appraise
Depending on what you brought, this takes 5-30 minutes. For gold/silver: we test (acid or XRF), weigh, calculate against current spot. For luxury watches: we open the caseback if needed, check movement, reference number, and pull comps. For graded sports cards: we verify the cert number against the grader’s database while you watch. For designer bags: we authenticate (date codes, stitching, hardware). For firearms: we inspect, run the model, check market value.
Step 4: We Make Two Offers
Most items can be either pawned (loan with the item as collateral) or sold outright. We give you both numbers. The pawn-loan number is generally 50-70% of the sell-outright number, because we have to hold inventory and absorb risk. You pick.
Step 5: Paperwork
Florida law requires a government-issued photo ID for any pawn transaction. We fill out the ticket (item description, your info, loan or sale amount, terms). You sign. Takes a few minutes.
Step 6: Cash in Your Hand
Same day. No waiting. No hold. No “we’ll mail you a check.” Cash, on the counter, before you leave.
If You Pawned: What Happens Next
Florida pawn loans run 30 days minimum. You can pay off the ticket any time before the due date — you only pay interest for the days you held the loan. You can also extend (most customers do at least once). Bring the ticket and the cash, walk out with your item.
If We Couldn’t Make an Offer
It happens. Sometimes we don’t have a market for an item, or the condition makes it not worth it. We’ll tell you straight, no charge for the appraisal. You walk out with your stuff and a free education.
What to Bring
- Government-issued photo ID (required by Florida law)
- The item you want to sell or pawn
- Original packaging, papers, receipts, certificates of authenticity (if you have them)
- Any chargers or accessories for electronics
- Any written competing offers — we beat them
