Vintage WOTC Still Rules
1st Edition Shadowless Base Set remains the gold standard. Charizard #4, Blastoise #2, Venusaur #15 in PSA 10 are six-figure cards. PSA 9 still trades in the high four to mid five figures. PSA 8 is a real number. Even non-holos in 1st Edition Shadowless command premiums most casuals don’t realize. If you have a sealed 1st Edition Base Set booster pack, talk to us before you do anything else.
WOTC Trophy and Promo Cards are the high end of the high end. Pikachu Illustrator (we know what it is). No. 1 Trainer, No. 2 Trainer, No. 3 Trainer. Tropical Mega Battle. Snap cards. If you have one, you don’t need our blog post — but if you inherited a collection and aren’t sure, bring it in.
Modern Chase: The Workhorses
Umbreon VMAX Alt Art (Evolving Skies 215/203) — “Moonbreon.” Still the modern chase. PSA 10 is a five-figure card. PSA 9 is several thousand. Raw is hundreds.
Charizard ex 199/197 (Obsidian Flames) — special illustration rare. Strong, liquid market.
Pikachu with Grey Felt Hat (151) — special illustration rare from the 151 set, demand has been steady.
Lugia V Alt Art (Silver Tempest 186/195), Giratina V Alt Art, Charizard VMAX Rainbow, Mew VMAX Alt Art (Fusion Strike 269/264) — all active.
Sealed Product: The Quiet Winner
Sealed Pokémon booster boxes — both vintage WOTC and modern chase sets — have been one of the best-performing collectible asset classes of the last decade. Evolving Skies booster boxes, Crown Zenith ETBs, 151 booster boxes, Paldean Fates. CGC Sealed graded boxes get a real premium over raw sealed. Vintage sealed (Base Set, Jungle, Fossil, Neo) is in a different stratosphere.
Japanese Sealed: Still Underpriced
VSTAR Universe, 151 JP, Pokémon Card 151 promos, Shiny Treasure ex. Japanese sealed has a strong Florida secondary market and trades at a discount to English equivalents on a per-pull basis. We buy it.
What’s Cooled Off
Generic modern bulk continues to be bulk. Mid-tier modern non-chase cards trade for less than printing cost. The 2020-2021 covid pandemic spike collapsed and hasn’t fully recovered for non-chase product. We still buy collections, but we price honestly — not at peak-2021 numbers.
What to Bring In
Slabs (PSA, BGS, CGC, SGC), sealed boxes and ETBs in their original condition, raw vintage in toploaders, modern raw chase. Bring it all — we sort on the counter.
