Every day at Advantage Pawn, we have the same conversation a few times: “Should I pawn this or just sell it?” The answer is almost always determined by one question: do you want this item back?
The Simple Decision Tree
Yes, I want it back: Pawn it. Use it as collateral on a 30-90 day loan, redeem when you’re ready, walk out with the item and a paid ticket.
No, I’m done with it: Sell it outright. You’ll get a higher number than the pawn-loan amount because we don’t have to hold it, insure it, and assume the risk that you don’t redeem.
Not sure: Pawn it. You can always come back before the due date and tell us you’re ready to sell — we’ll convert the pawn ticket into a sale at the appropriate price.
The Numbers
Generally, our pawn-loan amount runs about 50-70% of the outright-sell number. So a $1,000 sell-outright Rolex is roughly a $500-700 pawn loan. The exact ratio depends on liquidity (how easily we move the item if you don’t redeem) and condition.
The Cost of a Pawn Loan
Florida pawn loans charge interest plus storage. The legal maximums are spelled out in Florida Statute 539. We comply, we disclose every line, and we’ll walk you through the math before you sign. You only pay interest for the days you actually held the loan — pay off in 5 days, you pay 5 days of interest. Pay off in 25, you pay 25.
When Pawn Beats Sell
Sentimental items (your grandmother’s chain, your father’s watch). Items you’re using as a financial bridge (cash for rent until next paycheck). Investment items you don’t want to liquidate at the wrong moment (gold during a price dip, a graded card before a population shift). Items where you want optionality.
When Sell Beats Pawn
You’re cleaning out an estate or a closet and you don’t want any of it back. Items where the market is peaking and you want to capture the high. Items you’ve decided you’re emotionally done with. The cleanest cash-out.
You Can Change Your Mind
If you pawn and decide later you want to sell instead, come in before the due date and we’ll work it out. If you sell and want it back later, we can’t promise — once an item is sold, it goes into our retail inventory and may be gone the same week. Sell decisions are final, pawn decisions are flexible.
