The First 30 Seconds
Smell, weight, leather quality, hardware feel. A real Hermès Birkin has a specific weight and a specific smell. A Chanel Caviar quilted leather has a specific texture. A counterfeit will often “feel wrong” before any visual inspection — too light, too plasticky, off in some hard-to-articulate way. 30 years of handling real bags trains your hands.
Date Codes and Heat Stamps
Louis Vuitton: Date codes (2-letter country code + 4 digits) on a hidden tab inside the bag. We check the format, the year-week math, and whether the country code matches the era. LV phased out date codes in 2021 in favor of microchips — we know what to look for in newer pieces too.
Chanel: Serial number sticker (older bags) or the new microchip in pieces from 2021+. We check font, alignment, hologram, and the matching authenticity card.
Hermès: Blind stamp on the underside of a strap or near a clasp. The shape (square, circle, etc.) tells you the production year. The stitching count, the saddle stitching itself, and the quality of the metal hardware tell you the rest.

Stitching, Hardware, and Lining
Saddle stitching on Hermès is hand-done — counterfeit machine stitching is the giveaway. Chanel quilting has a specific diamond size and consistency. Louis Vuitton monogram canvas alignment matters — real LV bags are cut so the pattern continues across seams. Hardware (zippers, clasps, feet) is real metal, with the right weight and the right brand stamps.
What Helps Your Offer
Original dust bag, original receipt, original box, authenticity card or microchip, any service receipts, original tassels and clochette (Hermès). “Full set” pieces command a noticeable premium over orphan bags.
